LONGHORN RANCH SUBDIVISION
This subdivision of ranches is located in Las Animas County in Southeastern Colorado. The nearest
of the larger towns is Trinidad which is about 45 minutes away and has most services and necessities.
It is about two and a half hours to Colorado Springs and three and a half hours to Denver. This is
a ranching area with few homes and lots of open space and privacy. The ranches tend to be 35 acres
to 40 acres in size and they qualify for a domestic well which allows watering of livestock and horses
as well as gardens and trees in addition to household use.
There is no homeowners association and there are no fees. Because this is considered ranch land, the
low property taxes tend to be just $12 to $20 per year.
There are many kinds of wildlife in the area. This big pronghorn antelope buck was nearby as was
this quail. There are also plentiful rabbits, coyotes, hawks, eagles, song birds and other animals
including the occasional bobcat. One employee of Las Animas County said that there are many deer
and elk in the Apishapa State Wildlife Area, which is about 5 miles northwest of Longhorn Ranch.
It's a great place for watching wildlife or hunting.
A few miles to the northeast is the Comanche National Grassland which a huge expanse of federal land
open to hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and exploring.
Road access tends to be good, despite some properties being located on backroads. It does snow here
in the winter, but with the abundant sunshine and mild temperatures, it normally melts quickly. It's quite
a distance from electrical power and most residences use solar generators or wind generators, which
seem to work well in the area and in the long run, save on electrical bills.
